However, the master’s best work is believed to be “ The Trinity.” Rublev created the icon to commemorate St. The TrinityĪll Andrei Rublev icons are considered valuable shrines for the Orthodox Church. Interestingly, the artist painted Christ’s image in a Russian manner while most masters of his time worked according to Byzantine canons. The depicted features reflect a new stage in Rublev’s painting, which marked the heyday of Russian iconography. The image is poorly preserved, but one can discern the focused face and deep and thoughtfully piercing gaze of Christ. This icon is part of the Zvenigorod tier presumably created by Andrei Rublev in 1410. In this blog post, we want to tell you more about three of his most famous icons. Andrei Rublev icons are considered the highest achievement of the 15th century Moscow painting. The master also often painted cathedrals, along with other prominent iconographers, such as Theophanes the Greek. He studied the philosophical writings of the progressive thinkers of the time, including those of the monastery’s founder Sergius of Radonezh and his disciples. As a young man, Rublev became a monk at the Trinity-Sergius Monastery. It is known that he was born around 1360 in Veliky Novgorod. There is little credible information about his life. Rublev died in 1430, clothed as a Russian Monk and canonized by the Orthodox Church in 1988.The figure of Andrei Rublev, the great master of iconography, is shrouded in mystery. It’s a dark Russian drama that conveys a sense of the medieval times of Rublev and is in black and white. In 1966 a now classic film was made by the Russian film maker, Andrei Tarkovsky, called “Andrei Rublev”. Rublev’s art combined asceticism with the classic harmony of Byzantine mannerism. His Icons are seen today as ideals of Eastern Orthodox Iconography. The power of this Icon was observed and caused crowds of people to come and see it. ![]() It was only discovered in the early 1900’s when an art restorer in Russia began to clean away the soot and grime that had blackened the surface for centuries. Rublev’s great masterpiece, The Icon of the Holy Trinity, is the only work definitely attributed to him. ![]() The Assumption Cathedral in Vladimir and Holy Trinity Cathedral are thought to have been decorated by Rublev and Daniil Cherni at about 1425. Fresco, Seed of Abraham Holy Trinity Cathedral In 1405, Rublev decorated the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow with frescoes and Icons along with Theophanes the Greek, who was Rublev’s teacher. Rublev’s spiritual teacher, Saint Sergius of Radoneh, was the head of this Lavra until his death in 1392. He is generally thought to have lived at the Trinity-St. Saint Sergius of Radonehīorn in medieval times, sometime in the 1360’s, not much is known about his life. Revered amongst Iconographers as the most gifted Iconographer of all time, Andrei Rublev stands out amongst Iconographers for his ability to convey a subtle sense of spirituality with a highly expert ability to compose and paint Icons that address the issues of his time.
